Adopt

It’s not just the right thing to do; adoption is a reward.

#Adoptdontshop is a hashtag that is used by many people to encourage adoption over buying a dog. The first step in the adoption process is either to submit an application or contact us to meet one of our pups. Applications are processed in the order they are received. We carefully review each application and place dogs based on a variety of criteria. Ultimately, we will always act in the best interest of the dog. Having a meet and greet or home visit does not guarantee you will be approved. We take so many things into consideration when we place an animal in a home permanently. We are a relatively small rescue and can only do home visits where we can fit in the travel. Please do not take it personally if you fall outside of our area.

Do we require fences? No we do not (actually a few dogs do and will) but we LOVE fences! We really love them. However, just because your yard is not fenced does not mean your home isn’t magical. Every placement is different. We do however like to see any existing dogs in the house spayed or neutered, have regular vet exams and be on flea/tick and heartworm prevention.

How fast is our adoption process? That all depends on your schedule and our schedule. We try to be as fast and efficient as possible. We also try to respond to every application, but sometimes we receive so many applications for one dog we can’t keep up!

We do not discriminate on breed. We have many breeds but we also LOVE “pit bulls”. If you harbor any breed discrimination, we most likely cannot help you at K9 Orphans.

Please be patient! We are a volunteer organization – everyone has real jobs, families, and other commitments that sometimes take precedence.

The adoption process typically goes something like this:

  1. Submit an application
  2. Schedule a meet ‘n’ greet with the dog(s) you are interested in.
  3. We call vet, landlord (if applicable) and personal references.
  4. Schedule a home visit, preferably with all household members and animals present.
  5. Sign adoption contract, pay adoption fee, and transfer the dog.

Note: Applicants must be 21 years of age or older.

All adoptions include bringing the dog up to date on vaccines and microchipping.

$400 for all dogs

Adoptions include the following medical work:
  • all core vaccines for the first year (K9 Orphans considers the rabies, kennel cough, distemper combo including leptospirosis the core vaccines)
  • microchipping
  • dogs older than 6 months will have their first HW test
  • HW, flea and tick preventative through the month after adoption (additional preventatives may be purchased through our vet)
Dogs who are not spayed or neutered at adoption must be altered at the adopters expense by 7 months of age. K9 Orphans can provide several low cost options that you may qualify for. By NY State law, K9 Orphans must collect a $50 deposit that will be refunded when proof of spay or neuter is sent to us.

ON OCCASION, THESE FEES MAY BE ADJUSTED DUE TO EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES.
