Adopt/Foster/Volunteer

Adoption

The first step in the adoption process is either to submit an application or contact us to meet one of our pups. Applications are processed in the order they are received. We carefully review each application and place dogs based on a variety of criteria. Ultimately, we will always act in the best interest of the dog.

Please be patient! We are a volunteer organization – everyone has real jobs, families, and other commitments that sometimes take precedence.

The adoption process typically goes something like this:

  1. Submit an application
  2. Schedule a meet ‘n’ greet with the dog(s) you are interested in.
  3. We call vet, landlord (if applicable) and personal references.
  4. Schedule a home visit, preferably with all household members and animals present.
  5. Sign adoption contract, pay adoption fee, and transfer the dog.

The adoption fee is $250 for fixed adult dogs and senior dogs, $325 for dogs spayed/neutered by K9Orphans or with medical needs and $325 for puppies. This covers current vaccinations, spay/neuter, and any other medical necessities, such as worming. The $325 puppy fee also includes a microchip which is administered during spay/neuter. We prefer personal checks.

Fostering a Dog

All of the dogs available through K9 Orphans are placed in foster homes while waiting for the forever homes. This accomplishes many things such as socialization with people and pets, understanding of the dog’s personality, preferences, and quirks, and is much less stressful than being kept in a kennel or shelter. We are ALWAYS in need of more foster families to place our dogs with. The only requirement is that you care for and love the dog, make sure the medical needs are addressed, and be willing to transport to any adoption events, meet ‘n’ greets, or veterinary appointments. We require reference checks, a home visit, and completion of the Foster Contract before approval.

Volunteering

We have many opportunities for volunteers willing to donate their time! We are always in need of people to help organize fundraisers, aid with transportation and taking dogs to veterinary appointments, perform dog evaluations, and attend events. Please fill out the application if you would like to join us in our mission to save dog lives.

Owner Surrender

Sometimes it is not possible to keep a pet due to life situations. If you would like to surrender your dog to us, we will do everything we can to find him or her an excellent forever home. Please contact us prior to filling out the form.

“It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them, and every new dog that comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are.”
